It has been documented across ages from the Roman period to medieval and pre-industrial times, and across cultures from Europe to Africa and Asia [3]. His work is not without its critics, though.

I would wonder what our Neanderthal relatives would have done? I imagine they wouldn't have slept a full 8 hours in one go, especially if saber-toothed tigers were hunting at night...
