My goodness, Paul, you are a gifted writer who has shared an amazing story.
Where I used to live was by a large park which had a guy named Ray who was homeless. He lived in the park and we became friends.
He had an unofficial pole as the police of the park and would make sure that the drunk guys or those who were dangerous were moved along so our park could stay safe for the children and the dogs (he loved the dogs).
He told me once that he chose to be homeless because he got divorced and he had been on a waiting list for years for a council flat to become available, and when he finally made it to the top of the list he wanted his children to have roofs over their heads and so he gave the flat to his ex-wife.
I love that you have provided insight into a world many people don't understand or choose to avoid. I hope your luck takes a turn and better things come your way.
