We had to learn Hebrew at my school in Australia from grade 1.

Language was an issue for me as well. Hebrew was unlike any other language I knew. The only word I understood when I arrived was “Shalom.” I couldn’t read the Hebrew script to sound out words so I learned by rote, memorizing some key words and phrases and hoping it was enough to get by.

We had to learn Hebrew at my school in Australia from grade 1. What made it easier was they also have an alphabet but I could imagine it would be very difficult to learn as an adult!
